5 Lattice Images of Black and White Done Right

Every week, we compile our favorite photos from Lattice, our new destination for people who love photography. You can use Lattice to discover beautiful images and also curate boards on topics you’re passionate about.

This week, we’re highlighting great examples of standout black and white photos. We found these images on boards showcasing everything from portraits to national parks.

This first photo is a portrait of a bather at Hollywood Beach in Chicago, taken by Robert Englebright. The choice to use 120mm B&W film works well with this image, as all the negative space and beautiful greys begin to evoke a surrealist feeling where the figure starts to resemble a sculpture. Here we have an interesting look on elephants by Anette Mossbacher. In this instance, the black and white works to level the image into an almost even texture, where the two elephants begin to blend into one. You can find more photos of Africa’s Big Five in this board curated by Peter Delaney, a wildlife photographer.

This photo of Vik Beach in Iceland by Sophie Carr, employs black and white to reduce the land into deep blacks while standing in sharp contrast with the light grey tones of the water and sky, creating the dramatic clash we see below. A country this photogenic deserves more images, and you can find them in this beautifully curated Iceland board by Sophie Carr, a travel photographer based out of London.

The geometric shapes and lines are highlighted by the use of black and white in this image by Paul Cooklin. The brightest triangle successfully leads our eye into the center of the image and its subject, while the darker tones around her keep our eye centered. Paul, an award winning photographer, featured this image and others like it in a great B&W board he curated on Geometry, Light, & Shadow.

Last but not least, this photo of Kathleen Lake captured by Simon Blakesley uses black and white to congeal all of the elements in the frame, the ice, its reflections, the mountain, and the sky, into one intricate but powerful image. Whether shooting in black and white film, or applying the effect over a digital file in post, its use is a conscious decision and there are times where it works better than others.
